Grey Water Reuse for Agricultural Irrigation

Problem Observed

In water-scarce regions, farmers often rely on untreated or poorly treated grey water for irrigation, which can compromise soil quality and crop safety.

Project Context

Developed as part of the Conrad Challenge (CORNAD track)

Project Idea

The project focused on improving the safety of grey water used for irrigation by applying basic biological filtration concepts combined with simple system logic. The emphasis was on affordability and practicality for real-world use.

Approach

  • Studied how grey water quality affects irrigation and soil health

  • Explored biological filtration and basic purification principles

  • Designed a simplified system logic prioritizing low cost and ease of use

  • Evaluated how changes in water quality could impact agricultural outcomes

What I Learned

  • The importance of designing solutions that fit real constraints

  • How biological ideas can be integrated into simple systems

  • Why affordability and usability matter as much as technical accuracy

  • How environmental challenges require interdisciplinary thinking
